Trump and the GOP Continue Health Care Destruction with Roll Back of Birth Control Mandate

Trump’s Action is Mean-Spirited and Denies Women Basic Health Care

Washington, DC — Today, the Trump Administration issued a sweeping new rule that guts the federal requirement that employers include birth control coverage in their health insurance plans.  The decision will impact the more than 55 million women who have access to birth control without co-payments because of the contraceptive coverage mandate under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In 2013 alone, the mandate had saved women $1.4 billion on birth control pills.

In response, Health Care for America Now Co-Directors Ethan Rome and Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“The Trump Administration’s new rule is a direct attack on women’s health care. On the heels of repeatedly failed attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, this is another act of mean-spirited, destructive and brazen sabotage. Access to birth control is basic health care. Women should not have to pay the price of partisan political games. This is a discriminatory and unconscionable effort to deny women basic health care and economic security. Enough is enough.

“It’s time for Trump and the Republican Party to end their war on health care. Instead of working to take health care away from millions, our elected representatives should work to find bipartisan solutions to expand access to affordable health care.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
