Health Care for America Now (HCAN) brings together national and state grassroots organizations to fight for quality, affordable health care for everyone in America, to protect Medicare, Medicaid and the social safety net, and to make the rich and corporations pay their fair share of taxes to support the economy.
In 2008-2010, HCAN led the historic effort to pass the landmark Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Obama era that law brought the number of uninsured people in the United States to unprecedented low rates and finally created fair rules for insurance companies. Thanks to the ACA, over 23 million more people have health care through private insurance or Medicaid and millions of seniors in Medicare get discounts on prescription medicines. Because of the ACA, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions, charge women more for insurance than men, or refuse to cover basic services like mental health, addiction, or pediatric care.
For the last decade, HCAN has worked to implement and defend the ACA against partisan attacks to overturn and defeat the law. Now it’s time to take the next step and guarantee once and for all that everyone in the nation–no matter where they live, what they look like or how much money they have–can get quality, affordable and equally accessible health care for themselves and their families.
