Texas v. Azar Decision Hurts Millions of Americans, Attacks Affordable Health Care

Washington, DC – In response to the federal judge’s decision in the Texas v. Azar case today, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“With midterm voters overwhelmingly citing health care as their number one issue, the GOP has yet another unequivocal sign that Americans have rejected its war on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But instead of listening to American families across the country, Republican attorneys general have doubled down on their lawsuit and once again put health care for working families, veterans, people with disabilities, women, children and every single American living with a pre-existing condition at risk.

“President Trump has not only refused to defend the law of the land, he continues to do everything in his power to sabotage the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Now with Judge Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, we have a justice who supports the president’s efforts to undermine the law he’s supposed to implement and protect. This lawsuit could end protections for people living with pre-existing conditions and cause the 20 million Americans who gained health insurance through exchanges and Medicaid expansion when the ACA was implemented to see their benefits stolen and life-saving care denied or made unaffordable.

“Despite so many wins for health care this past election cycle, it’s clear that the fight for access to affordable care is long from over. With this lawsuit almost certain to reach the Supreme Court, we are once again reminded who will pay the price for the GOP’s partisan efforts to stack the court with conservatives who will put the insurance and prescription drug companies ahead of our healthcare: women, people with pre-existing conditions, older Americans and families.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
