Junk Insurance Hurts American Families, People with Pre-existing Conditions and Furthers Trump’s ACA Sabotage

Washington, DC – In response to the Trump Administration announcing that they will allow insurers to sell short-term policies that don’t adhere to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and last just under a year, despite the recommendations of the majority of health experts, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“President Trump is once again undermining the Affordable Care Act and sabotaging Americans’ health by allowing insurers to sell short-term policies that don’t even meet the minimum standards of care and allow discrimination against the millions of people with pre-existing conditions. Despite the recommendations of consumer advocates and health experts, Trump is choosing his political vendetta against the ACA rather than protecting life-saving care.

“Expanding junk insurance will hurt families, lead to more instability to the insurance market and increase costs for people seeking quality, affordable care in ACA marketplaces. Big insurance companies are already reaping in millions from the GOP’s sham tax plan that gives the wealthiest CEOs and big corporations unneeded tax breaks. Now, they’ll be able to steal millions more out of the pockets of hard working Americans by selling them junk insurance. Make no mistake: come this November, voters will remember that Republicans stood idly by rather stopping these attacks on our health care.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
