Draft SCOTUS Decision Shows Supreme Court Blatantly Playing Politics with Abortion Rights

Supreme Court Must Do Its Job and Uphold the Constitutional Right to Abortion That Has Been Affirmed Repeatedly for 50 Years

WASHINGTON — In response to the leaked draft Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which would end the Constitutional right to an abortion, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:

“Political games have no place on the Supreme Court, but this draft decision shows that too many justices care more about their personal ideology than about upholding Constitutional protections that have been in place for decades.  Freedom to access safe, affordable abortion is a critical part of health care. For nearly 50 years, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed this freedom to make personal healthcare decisions about if and when to start a family without interference or undue barriers.

“This draft decision flies in the face of that precedent and everything the Supreme Court is supposed to represent as a neutral arbiter of the law. If this majority opinion holds, millions of people will be denied abortion care, leading to serious health and economic consequences for them and their families. Rather than be able to decide for themselves the timing and size of their families, Americans and their doctors will face criminal penalties for terminating unwanted pregnancies and potentially other actions currently protected under Roe v. Wade.

“The Supreme Court should be working to protect rights and equal access to critical health services, rather than bending to the will of extremists hell bent on taking away health care. The justices should do their jobs and continue to uphold the well-established Constitutional right to abortion.”
