I was diagnosed with numerous brain and nerve tumors and went on medical leave this year. The current system with private health insurance companies is terrifying. Per the federal COBRA law, I have 8 months remaining either to die or to miraculously heal. In 8 months the private insurance company will terminate my policy; I'll no longer be able to buy coverage for what the insurance companies will label a "pre-existing condition" despite the fact that I was paying (and continue to pay) $600 per month for full health insurance coverage prior to the tumors being diagnosed.

With universal health care coverage the insurance companies would not be able to deny me health insurance because an illness lasted more than 18 months.
