In 1990 I was a senior in college, a single mother and pregnant with my second child. With no health insurance Medicaid was my safety net. Unfortunately in the community where I lived the only public hospital had recently closed leaving indigent women and children without healthcare. One alternative--drive to a major city over 50 miles away to spend the day waiting to be seen. The better alternative was a local clinic started by nurse midwives and a nurse practitioner with donated funds. My son was the second baby born at the birthing center in 1991. He was welcomed into the world by people who cared about him. An additional note: Because I had Medicaid no doctor in our community of then 80,000 people would take me as a patient because they did not accept Medicaid patients! I became very vocal about the healthcare crisis in our country and gladly participated in the filming of a PBS documentary "Our Children At Risk" hosted by Walter Chroncite. My question to you is this: Just how long will it take for us to have reliable healthcare for the citizens in this country? My son is now 6'2" and nearly 17 and the state of healthcare in this country is still a mess!
