My husband and I own several small, community newspapers in the intermountain west. We have historically provided insurance for all of our employees. However, this year our premiums went up anywhere from 30-85 percent. We have spent the last month searching high and low for a plan that provides our employees with some actual coverage for routine care (rather than simply catastrophic coverage) and that is financially feasible for them and us. We are at the point of simply giving our employees $300 a month and telling them to go out and find their own coverage. Unfortunately, we have a handfull of employees who we really value and who have been with us for a number of years who have preexisting conditions that would prevent them from qualifying for private insurance. We are just sick about the predicament we are in and help in the form of insurance reform simply cannot come soon enough.
