I am a 51-year-old diabetic. I was laid-off from a job that I had for 15 years a year ago. It wasn't a terribly interesting job, but the health benefits were fairly good, although they were expensive. I was able to find not-quite-full-time employment fairly quickly and did not have to use the COBRA benefits I was elibile for; I soon discovered that, had I been forced to apply for COBRA benfit, they were so expensive that the average unemployed person would not be able to afford them. Likewise, the faunted Massachusetts Health Reform plans are extremely expensive and cover very little. My income, although not large, was still too high for me to qualify for the Connector olans. I was able to start a plan that covers self-employed people, but it again, costs a lot and covers a little. I am actually able to apply for a very basic plan from my current employer, but again wil have a plan that doesn't cover much. I always wondre why the richest country in the history of the world cannot establish a national health care plan that ocvers everyone. This is a rhetorical question, of course, since I am fully aware of the various corporate and political interests that drive the national health care debate.
