I am a physician and specialist in lung disease practicing in Kansas. I do my best to deliver quality health care to all who seek my help, regardless of what (if anything) they can pay. However, every day (and increasingly more year by year) I see patients who either can't afford the medicines and treatments they need without undue sacrifice of their financial health, or who can't even get in to see doctors because of their lack of insurance or insurance that severely limits their choices. I long for a day (before I retire in a few years) when I don't have to hassle with these issues and can simply concentrate on diagnosing my patients' illnesses and prescribing the treatments they need without having to "pull my punches" and modify my best medical judgments downward to what they can afford. I didn't go into medicine to get rich, but I do feel that I should be paid for the hard work I do for my patients. I see from the inside all the games we doctors have to play with insurance companies simply to get paid (sometimes) for the services we render, so that the CEO's of the large insurance companies can live like kings on the money they are scamming from patients and doctors. I long for a more just and equitable system where the sole criterion is what the patient needs to be healthy rather than what will make the most profit for the insurance company bureaucracy.
