My wife Beata is a Hungarian national (legal US resident), my 3-year old son Lorand a duel national.
I became unemployed shortly after their arrival in November of last year. Our son started to complain of stomach pains and luckily the travel insurance Bea took out was able to cover a $100 visit to a clinic.
We applied to the Oregon Health Plan in December and was able to get our son coverage for 3 months - which started in April. My wife and I were denied, even though we were both still unemployed, applied much earlier than the deadline, and the state of Oregon opened up the plan to an additional 10,000 Oregonians.
In Europe, if one becomes unemployed, they understand that health risks can increase temporarily and make it a priority - under their respective systems - to provide health care coverage as an additional unemployment benefit even after monetary assistance runs out.
This tells me that European countries tend to make it a priority to look after their own while a normal working income is temporarily unable to be earned.
And America is still supposed to be "the richest nation on Earth?"
