I am a psychiatrist in Georgia. As such, I am among the lowest paid medicare practitioners, especially as compared to surgeons and radiologists. So, after having my reimbursements frozen for the past five years and waking up July 3rd with the news that my fees were cut 10%, I was outraged. I have been told that the formula for reimbursement penalizes doctors for seeing more patients. Lest I thought that was the end of it, I got a notice from one of the so-called miracle private medicare HMO's that out of a sum of not many hundreds of $'s, I was entitled yo a check of $.26. I have other horror stories, but that is not the point. If anyone thinks that letting the private health insurance industry skim profits from a medicare system that will soon be on life support, I hope they are forced to participate in one of these plans and try to find a sucker to treat them. I am not ever going to agree to accept one of these plans again. I am not going to accept new non emergency medicare patients until the congress fixes the 10% cut in my fees. I am sorry for that, but how many people would be willing to accept another year of frozen salaries? I will at least do that. But accept a 10% cut so that the private medicare insurers don't have to take a cut -- NEVER!.
