My family pays nearly 1/5 of our total household income to private health care insurance premiums. We are a young family who are self employed. We found the only way to obtain an acceptable level of coverage was for me to go on an HMO plan with Cigna for $283/month and my Husband and son go on a PPO for $297/month.

We are constantly trying to make ends meet and fear impending premium increases because we are singularly insured and have no bargaining power.

I have no problem paying for health insurance - I just feel that there needs to be a place to obtain reasonable cost health insurance for those of us in the "gap" area (i.e. those who don't have corporate coverage and those who are just above the qualifying line for any state or federal assistance.)

Additionally, I think it is imperative that we find a solution that can make health care insurance available to those who may have a previous health condition.

Oregon had a wonderful plan available funded thru the Tobacco settlement and offered a stipend based on a sliding scale of your income. Then you were able to get private insurance and pay for that which you could reasonably pay.

Keep up the fight to fix this very broken system. We're too great of a country to to have the best care available to all it's citizens!
