I have a life threatening cardiac arrythmia for which there is a procedure which is almost a cure. Unfortunately even though I have private health insurance, I have an "80/20" co-pay arrangement which means I have up to $10,000 in medical debt which I am responsible for. The procedure costs about $100,000.
Most hospitals are demanding that I come up with the $10,000 upfront before they will do this procedure. I simply cannot afford such a relatively large amount of money. I risk death or a disabiling stroke until I can come up with such a sum.
In addition, I also have a life threatening liver condition and again the same issue applies.
Its a shame that lack of money many times actually means death here in the United States of America.
Medicine should be more of a profession and less of a business.
