A friend of mine's mother, who could not afford health insurance, was complaining of back pain and after a several weeks her family convinced her see a walk-in doctor. He examined her and could not find anything wrong and told her it was probably a wrenched back and to go lie down and put heat on it. The pain continued to get worse and so she went back to the doctor who still could not "find" the problem so he gave her some medication (muscle relaxers, pain medication). Several weeks later with her now in excruciating pain went back to the doctor who now decided to do tests (MRI, blood). The resuult of the tests were that they found cancer. It was spreading and 6 months later she died.

It is so sad that this person did not to go to doctors unless she thought something was terribly wrong simply because she could not afford to pay. And far worse when she went to the doctor she received the minimal care because she could not "afford" to pay for those expensive procedures.
