My wife and I are retired teachers on a fixed income, with an annual COLA of only 2%. Our Medicare payment, and our Senior Supplement payment have increased much more than that each year. I have had a reoccurrence of a rare type of intestinal lymphoma which requires the care of a surgeon and oncologist, and has also required expensive chemotherapy and ongoing tests. If there were to be a cut-back in the level of medical coverage we currently have, or if our premium payments rise again, we are going to be in a very financially compromised position. We are of the opinion that universal health care coverage is the only way to ensure that people who need medical care will be able to get it. Coping with serious illness is challenging enough, but having to constantly worry about the financial impact makes it difficult to get through the days.
