I have terminal cancer. Medicare is all that is keeping me alive. After I pay my rent and medical insurance premiums, Internet, light and phone, I have $83.00 per month to LIVE on -- eat and pay prescription co-payments. Before I got Medicare this May, I was uninsured. So last year I spent $70.000.00 -- most of my retirement fund -- on medical care. I am now almost bankrupt. Without Medicare, I would be broke and probably dead. As it is, I'm forced to choose between eating and getting my prescriptions filled. I have a college education and worked all my life -- 30 years as a top-flight professional newsman. My news organization's owner -- Dr. Earl Brian -- bankrupted my newswire, UPI, stealing the management pension and health plans. That left me without a retirement. If there had been universal health insurance, I would still have my retirement fund and would not be near-destitute. Fortunately, my terminal cancer will kill me before too long, and this ordeal will be over.
