The US Government is quick to tell Americans that healthcare in France does not work well. Once on a visit to France I quickly became terrible ill shortly after my arrival. Went to the emergency room of a nearby hospital at approximately 11PM. The emergency room doctors actually thought I was having a heart attact. EKGs as well as many other test were performed. They called in a specialist who arrived at 1pm. They finally decided I had food poisoning (from the airline) and sent me on my way. I tried to pay them as I was leaving and they said they had no ideal what costs were involved because they were there to treat people not collect money. They said I would eventually receive a bill for the services which would be sent to my home in the USA. About 4 months later, the bill arrived. The cost after the exchange rate was less than 90 US dollars. Also, in the emergency room, I had to wait no more than 5 minutes before they attended to me. So much for it "doesn't work".
