I have been one of the fortunate ones, covered by the company's plan. As the premiums kept rising, shared by employer and employees, people started to opt out, left with no insurance.

We are in the "small business" category. Our accountant kept insisting that we could no longer sustain the dollars for employee insurance. The business was in the "red".

We held on for longer than we could afford, and finally had to scale down the insured list to managers and owners. It was a sad day for many, as we employ 100 people. Cobra, if available was out of bounds, cost wise.

As we are a restaurant, a good portion of our crew are minimum and slightly above minimum-wage earners, with perhaps a wife, perhaps children. Some, out of necessity, have second jobs.

We have to watch our bottom line, or else 100 more people could be looking for new jobs, including all the family members that work there.
