As a freelance artist I've never had access to employer health insurance, and have carried individual Major Medical since 1979. The annual premium started out at $278., with a $1000. deductible per illness. The annual premium is now over $4400. with a $3000. deductible. I have carried a $5000. deductible at times just to lower premiums, and have had to borrow to pay some. Meanwhile, I pay all my doctors, x-rays, and lab costs out-of-pocket, and always ask for the "self-pay" rate, but I've delayed medical care at times due to cost. Though the policy pays for nothing but serious illness, I've kept it because I don't want to be uninsured in that event. Because I've been fortunate not to have to test it, I don't know how good they are at paying claims.
