I am affluent enough to have a Union job that includes wonderful health insurance as part of my compensation. I am utilizing those benefits; I am leaving today for a stem cell transplant estimated to cost $100,000 ontop of tens of thousands of other medical treatments including one chemotherapy agent alleged to cast $7,000 per month, I'm benefitting from my second month of this Rx.
Are my family members more entitled to having "papa" alive and enjoying life with them because of my good fortune of Union membership? Or should all Americans have a ligitimate shot at surviving difficult health challenges even in my case, early detection and treatment may have avoided a great deal of illness and expense. I made a bad choice to seek help. I am embarrased by the number of Americans, including a disproportionate number of children who never get to make that choice because the live in a nation where a major party candidate, married to $ multiple millions, actually wants the corporate insurance industry to dictate benefits and determine who will be covered. I come from Wyoming. My junior Senator, an MD worth in excess of $9 million, voted against the SCHIP increase that would have eliminated the need to remove many Wyoming children from the coverage. I am affluent, fortunate, and embarrased to be an American.
