My wife is a Nurse Practitioner/Midwife. We have always worked in healthcare field volunteering in disasters such as New Orleans. The disaster our country faces now is the lack of health coverage for such a large portion of our society, and poor coverage or rejected claims for much of the rest. Even being providers, our family has been uninsured within the past 5 years and currently have only a high-deductible major medical coverage that does nothing for common illnesses or life's changes like pregnancy.
For Profit Healthcare simply does not work when the bottom line is maximizing profits by denying benefits.
Millions of Doctors and Nurses are signing onto Single Payer Universal Health Plan because it makes it easier for them to provide the services they love and swore to uphold.
The tide is turning and state by state Single Payer Healthcare plans may lay the foundations for a National Single Payer plan but its overwhelming support is finally inescapable to all but the healthcare/pharma industry lobbyists --and the politicians they keep. Make no mistake, this is a Civil Rights issue and a second Civil Rights Struggle against big-money/intrenched powerful interests. Yet, like the first Civil Rights movement the truth will always prevail in time.
