I am state representative for the 59th MO House District in MO. My family has been affected by lack of insurance, and so have many others I love. My father was injured in a non-union mines and did not have insurance. This left him very disabled in his elder years. My mother was mis-diagnosed with sinus infections for over a year, due to inadequate healthcare in a poor rural county. She really had leukemia which was not found until she was very ill and too frail to survive treatment. My grandfather had no health insurance and died of skin cancer that could have been successfully treated - except my family always avoided going to the doctor due to the high cost of care. Until I was 40, almost all of my working life had been without a health plan, and when transitioning to a new job, I experienced an unaffordable plan under COBRA. All of these experiences have made me passionate about universal coverage - every one in and nobody out - with high quality care at an affordable cost.
