Part of my job involves working at the jail with inmates who have just been arrested. Most of them are underemployed. Many of them are people with untreated mental illnesses and drug addictions, along with contagious conditions like MRSA and tuberculosis. Many do not qualify for state-provided healthcare because they earn too much to qualify but not enough to afford private insurance or an appointment with a doctor. The cost to society as a whole is extreme. They end up selling drugs, stealing, and hurting people. What kind of behavior can we expect from people that hear violent, negative voices that aren't really there, when providing consistent psychiatric medication would make their lives manageable? How can they get steady work if they are sick? We need universal coverage for medical, mental health, and substance abuse issues. Unless, of course, we are more interested in providing taxpayer-funded employment to prison builders and corrections officers.
