I am a single mother of two. I have had health insurance through my work and I have also been without. Since my husband walked out on me almost four years ago, myself and my children have all had trips to the ER as well as routine doctor and dental visits that I have been unable to pay, even earning $40,000 a year. I am not an addict or alcoholic, I am not a compulsive spender, I actually budget carefully and wisely.
Despite all of these efforts, our medical debt is in the thousands, even after paying thousands in insurance. I can't get a credit card, I can't buy a car, I can't get any kind of loan, and I can't buy my own home so I can provide some stability for my children. And worse, there appears to be no way out. After rent, food, gas, and daycare, there just isn't anything else to pay off this debt, much less to get the healthcare we need. I was told to see a cardiologist at a doctor's visit last Spring. But I can't even afford to take care of that, and apparantly I make too much to qualify for free government insurance programs.
