My husband is self-employed and I am a full-time parent. We can only afford health insurance if we are willing to live with a very high deductible, and if we are willing to give up any kind of savings - for retirement, college for our kids, emergencies, etc. We have chosen to live without the insurance, to pay our medical expenses out of pocket, and to hope that we or our kids don't get any seriously expensive illness or injury. It is a gamble, and a scary and infuriating choice to have to make.

So far, we've been lucky, but we aren't getting any younger...
