My Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2006, not too long after losing insurance coverage. Being a Type 2 diabetic, the most affordable solution for private coverage was almost $15,000 per year, which isn't very affordable. Now, two and a half years later, three surgeries, rounds of chemo and radiation, she will finally be eligible for Medicare. Already tens of thousands in debt (which would be more without generous support of the community hospital foundation and other groups) we are left to wonder if the quality of her care was affected by the fact that she hasn't had insurance. It is appalling to me that the most advanced and admired country in the world doesn't have a health care system capable of taking care of everyone, at least without making you go bankrupt. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that many question the status of our nation as part of the global community.
