A few years ago I had skin Cancer, I had the surgery in Colorado, however I needed to get the stitches removed in California, because I had just moved there. I couldn't find a Doctor in San Diego to take out the stitches because they were not the doctors who had put them in. They referred me to the emergency room or urgent care. I was quoted $140 - $290 to get my stitches out, a procedure that takes only a few minutes and requires no medical review. Because I had no insurance and just paid quite a sum (out of pocket) to get the skin cancer removed; I decided I would cross the boarder in to Ti Juana, Mexico and go to the hospital there. Luckily I am Bilingual and had no problem with the language. I was welcomed at the very clean, efficient Hospoital de los Angeles. The doctor there was friendly and quickly removed my stitches. I walked out paying only 230 pesos or $23.00.
It is a disgrace to the American Health care system, that I as a middle class American citizen would have to cross the boarder into what some may say is a less developed county to receive better and more affordable health care.
Thanks for listening.
