Within the span of 12 month period, we spent 40% of our net income on healthcare costs ($20,000 out of our $50,000 income). As members of the self-employed middle class, we paid nearly $1000/month for health insurance. During that year, my husband had one medical procedure and I gave birth to twins, so it's not like someone had a major health condition. After paying everyone's $1000 deductible and paying for a good chunk of my prenatal care and the birth, we found ourselves nearly bankrupted by medical costs. Not to mention that our health insurance provider tried to outwit us at several turns by trying not to pay for things! I ended up testifying in front of the Vermont Legislature because I was so incensed that a family of our means could be asked to spend 40% of their income on healthcare, or any one single need, for that matter. This tide surely will bankrupt the middle class. Now we have only major medical and often just don't go to the doctor when we should. And it's not like we are poor!
