We have a 3 year old child with autism and since our insurance does not cover any therapy we pay for it ourselves.
Our monthly expenses on therapy are more than our 15 year mortgage but still not enough. The media, CNN et al, love to show how therapy has work wonders on autistic children of celebrity parents - but never seem to talk about the costs.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics an autistic child should receive 25 hours of therapy per week. Even if it is all covered by insurance with a $20 copay it works out to be $500/ week or $26,000 per year. How many can afford that kind of money????
