I had to "retire" from my position as a district school nurse due to my disabilities. At the end of the contract year, I started my COBRA insurance. It was the only viable option, because of so many pre-existing conditions. I pay over $700 a month for my health insurance. I live on Social Security Disability and (luckily) a disability insurance which I purchased for several years through my employer. I live on $2500 a month. And of course my medical insurance includes co-pays of $20 per visit. Guess what is the highest living expense I have each month? Even my mortgage is less than that. I just keep hoping I can make it until I will be eligible for Medicaid (2 years after my disability payments began). I'm accustomed to no savings, since my divorce. I'm lucky to save a few hundred dollars of several months just in time for homeowner's insurance or county tax time. I know I am one of the "lucky" ones who was eligible for COBRA and disabilty payments, but I rarely feel lucky. Watching every penny is exhausting but what choice is there. Thanks for reading.
