My husband was self-employed his entire life, and I work part-time and am not eligible for insurance. This winter he was treated for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer). We could not have afforded to pay for the treatment except for Medicare, which provides universal health insurance for people age 65 and older. It's a wonderful program. If we had not had Medicare, he might have died by now, because we could not afford private health insurance. I believe all Americans should enjoy the benefits that Medicare offers older adults.

We did have to pay more than $3000 out of pocket for his medications. Since his treatment drugs were so expensive, he went into the Coverage Gap of Medicare Pt. D. Compare that to when my mother was treated for the same disease 25 years ago: my father's employer continued to pay for his health insurance after he retired, and they paid a very minimal amount for her treatment.
