Statement on Senate Finance Committee Discussion of Public Health Insurance Plan
Washington, DC – Health Care for America Now (HCAN) – the nation’s largest health care campaign – released the following statement today in response to the Senate Finance Committee discussion of the public health insurance plan.
“The insurance lobby’s knee-jerk rejection of Senator Schumer’s proposals shows that they are desperate to keep their monopoly on health insurance and deny people in America a choice. After a decade in which private health insurance premiums have gone up six times faster than wages, Americans clearly need the choice of a public health insurance plan to compete with private insurers. It is clear that we will see legislation coming from all the key committees in the House and Senate, with the support of President Obama, that gives the choice of private or public health insurance to American families and businesses.”
“Today Senator Schumer exposed the insurance industry’s greatest fear—having to compete with a public health insurance plan that will put people before profits, be open with the public about how it operates and offer peace of mind to Americans. As Senator Schumer said, while some may have problems with government insurance, many more people have problems with private insurance. The bottom line for Senator Schumer is giving Americans the choice of private and public health insurance. That’s putting common sense ahead of ideology.”
